We have a 75 lb shepherd mix, Bear, and 72 lb retriever mix, Chaco. Both are rescue dogs and came to us as 30 lb preteens with some fear issues. Chaco, almost 4 now, didn't like a brush at first but adjusted very well, is very good at grooming himself and loves bathes. Bear, almost 3 now, still has some fear and timidity, hates a brush and bath but will tolerate both because he's a sweet good-hearted dog... But he is terrible at grooming himself. That has all combined to me being terrible at keeping his long hair from matting in key places; behind is ears, his haunches, and his tail. Then we got this dream dematting tool and our lives changed. My only regret is not taking pictures of the aftermath.Let me preface Bears work by saying I took scissors to some of his dreds. There's only so much tugging you should attempt with this tool before it's uncomfortable, even painful, for the animal. Don't get carried away in your excited cloud of fur and forget that dogs have feelings too. Okay, remember that Bear never liked being brushed. But he LOVES this dematting tool. He runs from a brush and runs to this. This tool is 2 sides; you begin with the side that has less hooks then move to the side with more hooks after the first side is practically not pulling hair out anymore. I worked in patches on Bear but I started by getting us both used to the tool in long strokes on his back (always with the direction the hair falls). This was at the beginning of summer and Bear had seemed a little sluggish. Now we knew why. He had so much freaking hair he was just weighed down in hot hot South Texas humid heat. As hair started coming off his back he relaxed and actually enjoyed the feeling. The hooks are rounded on the end so it doesn't poke and the inside of the hooks are sharpened to blades so it will just cut the hair if it's not pulling out gently. Once we were both mesmerized I moved onto his ears. I started at the bottom of his long hair and just worked my way to the top in layers. When I came to a mat that I didn't remove with scissors I worked on it with the first side of the tool to loosen it then flipped over to the second side to remove it with ease. Then flipped back over to the first side and kept working my way up. Then I went back over his whole ear from bottom to top with the second side of the tool. This was how I did all of his problem areas. The rest of his body I used the tool like a brush. By the time I was done with him there was some much hair floating around the backyard we had to rake the whole thing to see how much we pulled out. Then it was mixed with lawn debris so it wasn't very accurate but it was still a pile the size of Bear himself. He's not sluggish anymore. He was so much happier after we dematted him and removed that undercoat. I've only gotten a couple of small mats out of his ears since then, almost 4 months later.Please no shaming for letting my dog get dreds. I'd be willing to bet there are more people that can relate than people who want to hate. I have happy healthy dogs. So there.Chaco was much easier. He has a beautiful tail fan that he's always kept nice. I barely had to brush him before. So I just took his undercoat out but good gravy he had even more hair than we expected. Almost as much as Bear. By the time we were done with both we filled 2 kitchen sized trash bags with compact hair (and some lawn debris) from both of them. And both of their coats had such a healthy shine.Long story not short: get this tool. Your dogs will thank you and you will thank you.
